Theodore Gerrald - Newborn Session

Theodore Gerrald Newborn Session

I have a special place in my heart for newborn sessions. There's something so special about being in someone's home during the first few days of welcoming a new baby. The smell of a fresh box of Pampers swaddlers (the expensive kind that you only buy when they are newborns).  The sounds of baby finding his voice and expressing an innate need for MORE MILKThe sweet snuggles. The grandmothers who keep the washer going and home-cooked meals on the table. And of course the sounds of big brother playing trucks in the living room wondering what all this fuss is about.

I loved every minute spent with the Gerrald family. Will and Caitlin, together with big brother Henry, welcomed their newest edition, Theodore on April 16th. You can see the joy that "Teddy" already brings to his family.

Will and Caitlin are fellow Furman alumni - it was so fun to reconnect and share college stories. I still remember Will's involvement in Furman Singers on campus, but what I didn't know was that Caitlin had a beautiful voice as well! I think my favorite part of the session was witnessing Will and Caitlin quietly sing "How Great Thou Art" over Theodore.

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

Talk about goosebumps. I had to put my camera down and soak it in. I thought about how God used the same majestic power to build mountain ranges, sprinkle the sky with stars, and now to create his special child, Theodore.

I thought about how God has given Will and Caitlin the gift of their voices to worship. And in a strange way, I think God has given me photography for the same reason. To worship.

Worship is defined as "the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration". When I pick up my camera, the tiny view finder has a way of blocking out all distractions. I focus acutely on the beauty of what's right in front of me. And I feel God's presence. Yes, of course I want to create beautiful photographs for families to treasure. But my prayer is that my work ultimately points back to Christ. That people would look at my photographs and praise Jesus for his goodness and the gift of family.

After a few more minutes of singing, Will noticed that I had stopped taking photos and asked, "Oh, should we stop?"

I said, "No, keep singing!"

And I encourage you today, whatever your gift is - use it as an act of worship.

Many thanks to the Gerrald family for inviting me into your home and reminding me of what true worship looks like.
